Senior Falls Can Be Prevented

Falls are the most common cause of injury and the 6th leading cause of death for seniors in Australia. One-third of people aged 65 years and over will typically fall at least once each year, accounting for nearly half of admissions to longterm care facilities. Approximately 50% of the people who fracture a hip never regain their pre-fall level of mobility.

There are many factors that contribute to falls in the elderly, including side effects of medications, vision impairment, and of course lack of mobility and cognitive function.

Our seniors can often develop a fear of falling which makes them restrict physical activity often leading to poor balance, weak muscles and sore joints, which in turn just makes the fall problem even worse.

The simple intervention of wearing comfortable hip protectors can result in increased confidence to keep mobile and therefore leading to less chance of a fall - given that 40% of falls that require the hospitalisation of the elderly person involve hip fractures

The evidence is clear - hip protectors can prevent devastating hip fractures in our elderly population who are at risk.
